flax factory loft

Kuurne, BE

completed august 2022

A modern kitchen with a marble countertop, two wooden stools, and a floral centerpiece. There's a beige couch and a dog visible in the living area.

Located within a former flax warehouse in Kortrijk, this project transforms an industrial structure into a contemporary and livable loft. The design approach was guided by a careful balance between preserving the raw character of the building and introducing warmth through materiality and spatial refinement.

The existing structure, defined by its exposed trusses and generous open volume, forms the backbone of the project. Rather than concealing these elements, they were embraced as defining architectural features, establishing a strong visual rhythm throughout the space. The geometry of the structure is subtly echoed in the herringbone parquet flooring, creating a dialogue between the original industrial framework and the new interior interventions.

At the center of the loft, the living space acts as the main hub of the home. A kitchen island in travertine stone anchors the space, functioning both as a practical element and a sculptural focal point. Its soft, mineral tone integrates naturally with the overall palette, reinforcing the connection between material and architecture.

Materiality plays a key role in shaping the atmosphere of the interior. Walls finished in lime-based paint introduce a soft, textured surface that contrasts with the more rigid industrial elements of the structure. This combination creates a layered spatial experience where roughness and refinement coexist in balance.

Throughout the loft, contrasts are carefully orchestrated. The sharp lines of the existing trusses are set against the softer geometries of the custom-designed furniture, resulting in a space that feels both structured and inviting. This interplay between precision and softness defines the overall identity of the project.

The interior also serves as a backdrop for a curated selection of vintage furniture and artworks, reflecting the personality of the inhabitants. Rather than dominating the space, these elements are integrated as part of the architectural composition, adding depth and individuality without disrupting the overall coherence.

The result is a loft where industrial heritage and contemporary living are seamlessly intertwined. A space defined by openness, material honesty and a refined balance between raw structure and domestic warmth.
