Residence in the fields
Ardooie, BE
Located within an open agricultural landscape, this new-build residence was developed for a young couple in their early thirties. The clients approached us to design the interior in close collaboration with their appointed architect. Because the project was still in its early stages, we had the opportunity to further refine the architectural plan and adapt it to the way the clients envisioned living in their future home.
The architect had designed a clear open-plan layout which formed a strong starting point. Through conversations with the clients about their lifestyle and long-term vision for the house, it quickly became clear that several spatial adjustments could further strengthen the project. The residence has a distinctly linear footprint of 34 by 11 meters, with the entire long façade opening up through a continuous glass wall. This strong gesture connects the interior to the surrounding fields and makes views and sightlines a central element of the design.
To organize the generous open space without compromising its spatial continuity, custom-made furniture elements are used to subtly define different atmospheres within the living area. The living room, dining space and kitchen remain visually connected, while each area retains its own character. These custom interventions were deliberately designed as open and light structures, ensuring that the surrounding landscape remains visible throughout the interior.
Materiality plays an essential role in creating a calm and coherent environment. A natural stone floor in Crema Macedonia is combined with light oak, resulting in a warm and natural palette that reflects the tones of the landscape. The soft materials interact with the changing daylight and subtly bring the outside environment into the home.
A carefully composed fireplace wall forms the central anchor of the living space. The wall is clad in light onyx, a material that also reappears in the kitchen island, creating a quiet visual continuity throughout the interior. Walls and ceilings are finished with a textured mineral paint, adding depth and tactility while referencing the natural surroundings.
The kitchen was conceived as an integral part of the open living environment. The island, finished in a technical coating and topped with an onyx work surface, connects to a dining table that extends from the island, creating a social and informal gathering space. An oak veneer wall introduces a playful transition towards a sliding door with a subtle grid pattern, leading to a refined home office. The grid softly filters the incoming light, creating shadow patterns reminiscent of the leaves of the surrounding trees and establishing a gentle dialogue between work and daily life.
The same calm material palette continues throughout the rest of the house. On the first floor, the master suite combines bedroom, dressing and bathroom into a serene private retreat. From the bath, the couple can enjoy uninterrupted views over the surrounding fields. Here again, a sliding grid door introduces a delicate play of light and shadow within the space.
Across the entire residence, materials are consistently applied: light natural stone, oak and bronze fixtures. Together they create a quiet and timeless interior that reflects the surrounding landscape and emphasizes a sense of balance, warmth and simplicity.
